Caves Beatusholen

The Beatus Caves are a fascinating natural wonder located above Lake Thun, near Interlaken. These extensive limestone caves stretch over one kilometer into the Niederhorn massif, featuring illuminated walkways, underground waterfalls, stalactites, and stalagmites. According to legend, Saint Beatus sought refuge here in the 6th century, battling a dragon and bringing Christianity to the region. Today, visitors can explore the mystical interiors, enjoy a cave museum, and take in panoramic lake views from the entrance. The Beatus Caves are ideal for families, geology lovers, and anyone curious about the hidden world beneath the Swiss Alps.

The Beatushöhlen (St. Beatus Caves) are among the most impressive cave systems in Switzerland, stretching deep into the Niederhorn mountain above the northern shore of Lake Thun. With over 1,000 meters of illuminated walkways open to the public, these limestone caves offer a mesmerizing journey through chambers of stalactites, stalagmites, and cascading underground waterfalls.

Legend has it that in the 6th century, a monk named Beatus came to this area to spread Christianity and sought shelter in the caves. He is said to have defeated a dragon that lived inside, making the caves a place of myth as well as geology. A statue of Saint Beatus greets visitors at the cave entrance, which is perched high above the lake and offers stunning panoramic views.

Inside the cave, visitors follow a well-maintained path that winds through narrow passageways, echoing halls, and chambers filled with bizarre and beautiful rock formations. Along the route, information panels explain how the caves were formed over millions of years by water erosion and mineral deposits. The natural spectacle is enhanced by mood lighting that brings out the textures and colors of the cave walls.

At the entrance, there’s also a small museum and restaurant, making it a great half-day destination. The approach to the caves includes a scenic path through forest and along waterfalls, which adds to the experience.

Beatus Caves are accessible from Interlaken by bus or car, and the site is suitable for families and visitors of all ages. Whether you’re fascinated by geology, legends, or just looking for a cool escape on a hot summer day, the Beatus Caves are a magical place to discover the hidden heart of the mountain.
