Lake Grimselsee & Totensee
Grimselsee and Totensee are two striking high-altitude lakes located at the scenic Grimsel Pass in the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by rugged granite landscapes and towering peaks, these reservoirs offer dramatic alpine views and a sense of raw, untamed nature. Both lakes are artificial, created for hydroelectric power, yet blend seamlessly into the mountainous terrain. Visitors can enjoy panoramic drives, short hikes, and viewpoints that showcase the sheer scale and beauty of the region. The area is especially popular with photographers and nature lovers looking to experience the wild, majestic side of Switzerland away from the crowds.
Located along the Grimsel Pass—one of Switzerland’s most spectacular mountain routes—Grimselsee and Totensee are two high-altitude lakes that offer visitors a unique and rugged alpine experience. Both lakes sit above 2,000 meters and are surrounded by the harsh yet beautiful granite landscapes of the central Swiss Alps. The area is known for its dramatic contrasts: steep rock faces, shimmering waters, and distant glaciers.
Grimselsee is a large reservoir formed by the Grimsel Dam and is part of a hydroelectric power network managed by Kraftwerke Oberhasli. Its striking turquoise water, fed by glacial runoff, lies beneath towering peaks and is often surrounded by snow patches even in summer. The winding road that hugs the dam wall offers impressive views of the lake and the engineering marvel that contains it. A stop at the Grimsel Hospiz—a historic mountain inn built on a granite outcrop between the two lakes—is highly recommended for its stunning terrace views.
Just a short drive further along the pass road lies Totensee (Lake of the Dead), a smaller but equally atmospheric lake perched near the summit of the Grimsel Pass. According to legend, the lake got its name after a battle during the Napoleonic wars, when the bodies of soldiers were thrown into the water. Today, however, it’s a peaceful, hauntingly beautiful spot where mist often hangs over the surface in the early morning, creating a surreal and moody ambiance.
Both lakes are easily accessible by car and provide an excellent opportunity to experience Switzerland’s high-alpine landscape without the need for long hikes. Short walking paths around the lakes and numerous roadside viewpoints allow visitors to soak in the stark beauty of this remote region.
A visit to Grimselsee and Totensee is perfect for those seeking awe-inspiring scenery, crisp mountain air, and a glimpse into Switzerland’s balance between nature and innovation.
