Waterfalls Staubbachfall

Staubbachfall is one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in Europe, plunging nearly 300 meters from a sheer cliff above the village of Lauterbrunnen. Its name—“Staub” meaning dust—refers to the fine mist created as the water evaporates in free fall, especially striking on sunny, windy days. This graceful waterfall is an iconic symbol of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, often described as a real-life “Valley of Waterfalls.” A short hiking path leads to a lookout point behind the falls, offering a unique perspective and refreshing experience. It’s a must-see stop in one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in the Alps.

Staubbachfall is the majestic waterfall that defines the skyline of Lauterbrunnen, one of Switzerland’s most dramatic and beautiful alpine valleys. Dropping from a height of 297 meters, it is the third-highest waterfall in Switzerland and one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in all of Europe. What makes it truly magical is the way the water transforms into mist during its descent—hence the name “Staub” (German for “dust”).

Visible from almost every point in the village, Staubbachfall has long captured the imagination of poets and travelers. In fact, it inspired none other than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose visit to the area in 1779 led him to write his poem “Gesang der Geister über den Wassern” (“Song of the Spirits over the Waters”).

Visitors can walk along a short, steep path up the cliffside to reach a rocky platform behind the waterfall. There, you’re treated to an unforgettable experience—watching and feeling the water fall in a veil of mist just meters away, all while looking out over the Lauterbrunnen Valley. It’s both humbling and invigorating.

The surrounding valley, often called “The Valley of 72 Waterfalls,” provides a surreal backdrop: steep cliffs, alpine meadows, and traditional Swiss chalets, with glaciers and mountain peaks towering above. Staubbachfall is not just a highlight of Lauterbrunnen—it’s a symbol of the valley’s untouched grandeur.

A visit here is ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking a peaceful yet awe-inspiring encounter with the power of alpine water. Whether admired from below or explored from behind, Staubbachfall never fails to leave an impression.
