Passes Susten

The Susten Pass links the cantons of Uri and Bern and is one of the most scenic and well-engineered roads in the Swiss Alps. At 2,224 meters above sea level, the pass offers panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and dramatic mountain walls. Highlights include the Steinsee lake and views of the mighty Steingletscher. The road itself is a masterpiece of curves, tunnels, and switchbacks, ideal for scenic drives, motorbike tours, and photography. Open from late spring to autumn, the Susten is less crowded than other passes and a true delight for lovers of unspoiled alpine beauty.

The Susten Pass is a spectacular high-mountain route connecting the Reuss Valley in Uri with the Gadmen Valley in Bern. At 2,224 meters above sea level, it stands as one of Switzerland’s most beautiful and harmonious alpine crossings, often praised for both its natural beauty and its well-crafted engineering.

Completed in 1945, the Sustenstrasse was designed not only as a functional route but as a scenic masterpiece. The road features sweeping turns, arched bridges, and perfectly carved tunnels—all while offering uninterrupted views of high peaks, deep valleys, and glacier fields. One of the highlights is the Steingletscher (Stone Glacier), which can be admired from roadside viewpoints or short trails. Nearby, the Steinsee reflects the surrounding mountains in vivid blue and green hues, creating a dreamlike scene.

The pass is also a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers. Waterfalls cascade down rock walls, alpine flowers bloom in meadows, and marmots scurry across the roadside. There are multiple parking areas and picnic spots, ideal for breaks and snapshots.

Thanks to its excellent road conditions and broad layout, the Susten Pass is popular with motorcyclists and touring cars, though it remains quieter than neighboring routes like the Furka or Grimsel. The road is typically open from May to October, depending on snowfall.

At the top of the pass, visitors are rewarded with a wide panoramic view and a sense of vastness that only the high Alps can provide. Whether you’re on a day tour, hiking a nearby trail, or simply admiring the view, the Susten Pass is a place that stirs the soul and camera lens alike.
